The 21st Century Packhorse Librarians

During the Great Depression a group of women saddled up their horses and delivered books through the Appalachian Mountains. In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, we are bringing back the Packhorse Librarians in the 21st Century style. Free books delivered throughout the Appalachian Mountains!

Donate Books for Appalachia

Near or far, there are so many ways you can help bring the gift of books to families in Western North Carolina!

Collect Used Books

Please ensure that all books are in excellent condition. No books with water damage, torn pages, writing, or excessive wear. Remember, these books are gifts for families, some of whom have lost everything and we want to honor them by providing quality books that feel like treasures.

Sponsor a Home Library Kit

Each Home Library Kit is carefully curated to help families build a starter library. These kits go to families living in remote areas with limited access to public libraries or stores.

Partner as an Author or Publisher

We’ve had wonderful experiences with authors and publishers generously donating books to this cause. If you’d like to help us bring your books to children or adults in rural Western North Carolina, please reach out. We love partnering with authors and publishers to make a difference!
