The Story Behind the Packhorse Librarians—SWVA Chapter
I am Katie Mattox— born and raised in Southwest Virginia, I am unapologetically Appalachian. I am a mother of 2, an EMT and the wife of a paramedic. I have a heart for growing literacy in the Appalachian Mountains and getting books directly into the hands of those who need them the most. As the SWVA Packhorse Librarian I am working to help people build home libraries as well as find books to comfort them through even the hardest seasons.
Our goal: Bring the joy of reading to families who need it most
We believe that books are more than just collections of facts or stories – they are vessels of truth and meaning.
This is why we focus on getting rich, meaningful books into the hands of families and children. Books that not only inform but transform – the kind that spark curiosity, shape character, and open hearts to deeper truths.
